My current obsession is homelabbing -- it's my favorite hands-on way of learning about technology. I'm particularly interested in DevOps tech as it bridges my two worlds of software development and IT/operations.
Projects
Go Portfolio
In 2024, I got really interested in backend web development -- REST APIs, databases, microservices, etc. During that period, I rebuilt my website using Go. It was a completely over-engineered web app with a SQL db, user auth, session management, form submissions... all implemented from scratch using only Go's standard library. Even the UI was written with Go's templating package. I'm still in love with Go and its whole philosophy around software.
Mount Prospect Web Design
In 2023, my wife and I started a small web design/development business. This was before we had kids -- we're a little busier these days. During that period, I went down the frontend web dev rabbit hole and we built several sites for clients that I still maintain today. I built our marketing site with Svelte and Tailwind and it was a very pleasant experience.
Daphnes Bar
During the pandemic, I got really into two hobbies -- writing code, and making cocktails. This project was one of the first web apps I built from scratch. We would host cocktail parties and I would send everyone this link and then they would order drinks from me at my "bar". It was a lot of fun.
